What's that smell?

So, I've realized that a big part of motherhood involves your olfactory sense. You start off with a newborn baby -- and they smell delicious. Their skin and their baby head...bliss. Then you quickly turn to gas and dirty diapers...and generally speaking, nursing babies dirty diapers are relatively harmless. The smell begins to become a little more distinct if you give them formula, but again, nothing completely repugnant. This all changes as they move towards eating solid food. And then, you have a child who becomes mobile and stinky. So the stink moves with them...which means you have to follow the stink. And should your child be in a room with other children you have to do the unthinkable hiney sniff, you actually lift your precious baby's bottom up to your nose and smell--to verify the contents. Around this time my children have also developed another distinct smell -- morning breath. (As a sidenote, this is why babies are born as newborns who smell wonderful and coo and smile at you, because if they came out as a two year old, the chances are significantly higher that we would try to return them from whence they came...)
But, today Jake, we have reached a new threshold -- B.O.
I have suspected for a little while that we could be approaching this...but I thought it might hold off a little while longer. So today, after playing outside, you took your bike helmet off and said to me "what's that smell?" And all I could say was "it's you".
I thought the day you told me that one of your pits smelled like rotten onion and the other pit smelled like old vegetables, it was just an anamoly. But after coming inside and sitting down next to you on the sofa -- well, it was directly to the shower for you my friend. I see a stick of deoderant in you future.
And another vestige of childhood slips away....

Baby Face

So I found this picture of my sweet Emily Grace when she was two days old on Daryn's computer....played around with a new photo program...super easy to put it onto blogger....and so here we go. I HAD to do it, because due to a failed motherboard all my other newborn pics of her have currently disappeared into the ether...so this is just in case we have another computer "glitch"....don't ya just love technology?
